Genetic Polymorphisms of Growth Hormone (GH), Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) and Diacylglycerol Acyltransferase 2 (DGAT-2) Genes and Their Effect on Birth Weight and Weaning Weight in Goats
The study investigated the effect of genetic polymorphisms of the growth hormone (GH), the insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and the diacylglycerol acyltransferase 2 (DGAT-2) genes on pre-weaning growth traits in goats at a commercial goat farm in Thailand. The DNA of 171 samples from several types of Boer (B), Thai native (TN), Anglo-Nubian (AN) and Saanen (SA) breed fractions were isolated. Conformational patterns of the GH, IGF-1 and DGAT-2 genes were classified into four (AA, GG, AG and AC), seven (AA, BB, AB, CC, CD, CE and CF) and six (AA, AC, BB, BC, CC and DD) genotypes by single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP). The AG, AB and AA genotypes of the GH, IGF-1 and DGAT-2 genes were found to have the highest genotypic frequencies. The AC of GH, CD of IGF-1 and homozygous BB, CC and DD of DGAT-2 genes were found to have the lowest genotypic frequencies. The SSCP patterns of the GH, IGF-1 and DGAT-2 genes were associated with birth weight (BW) and weaning weight (WW) (P<0.05). The genotypes AG, CD and CC of the GH, IGF-1 and DGAT-2 genes had higher BW and WW than the others. Based on the results, these genes could be exploited as candidate genes for marker-assisted selection in goat.
