Environmental Politics: Global and Domestic Dimensions
Antonio L. Santos
Abstract
This paper examines the domestic and international dimensions of environmental politics focusing on the impact of development on the environment. It equally looks from a macroscopic perspective measures and methods adopted by local and national governments and even some international agencies, in mitigating the increasingly-disturbing effect of various types of pollution affecting the selected natural resources like air and water.
Environmental problems continue to challenge local, national and international governments because of the inherent contradiction between the concept of development and the conservation of the environment. The need to strike a balance between the two concepts poses some kind of a dilemma.
More than the theoretical and conceptual considerations, there is a distinct need for government at the local and national levels, and various sectors—business, civil society, academe—to join hands in a common effort to conserve and protect the environment.
