Abstract

Hematological, serum biochemical and electrolyte values were determined in 15 Nubian ibexes (7 males and 8 females) at King Khalid Wildlife Research Center at Thumamah, Saudi Arabia. The data comprised 11 hematological parameters (RBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, red cell distribution width, total leucocyte, lymphocyte, granulocyte and monocyte counts) and 20 biochemical and electrolyte parameters (total proteins, albumin, globulins, A:G ratio, glucose, urea, BUN, total serum bilirubin, cholesterol, creatinine, total lipids, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase) and Na, Cl, K, Ca, Mg and inorganic phosphate parameters. Statistical analysis revealed no significant intersex differences in these parameters, with the exception of RBC count, hematocrit, total leucocyte count and total serum bilirubin, all of which were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in female than male ibexes. The data from this study were compared with those reported in other species of domestic and wild ruminants, including other species of ibex. To our knowledge, this is the first record on hematological, serum biochemical and electrolyte values in the Nubian ibex.

Key words: Nubian ibex, Capra ibex nubiana, serum biochemistry, inorganic constituents, Saudi Arabia
